Joe Pfohl

Senior Full-Stack Engineer | TypeScript, Next.js, Node.js & AWS

Summary

I'm a full-stack engineer and builder who takes complex systems from concept to production. I specialize in the TypeScript ecosystem (Next.js, NestJS, React, Node.js) and cloud platforms (primarily AWS).

I love building software that makes complex workflows feel simple—whether that's designing visual graph-based query tools for non-technical users, wiring up event-driven ingestion pipelines, or provisioning cloud infrastructure with Terraform.

I value engineering craftsmanship, practical problem-solving, and collaborating with strong engineering teams that care about building maintainable, high-impact products.

Professional Experience

Technical Lead / Principal Software Engineer (MSO & Innovation)

Excellus BCBS | Remote
December 2020 – Present
  • Led full-stack development of Payment Integrity, a multi-tenant SaaS platform on AWS, taking the system from initial concept through production deployment with a small engineering team.
  • Designed and built a graph-based visual query tool (DAG), enabling healthcare claims specialists to visually model complex audit rules and query large datasets without technical background, cutting research and feedback cycles from weeks to minutes.
  • Engineered event-driven backend ingestion pipelines using AWS EventBridge, SQS, Lambda, and NestJS, backed by PostgreSQL to support flexible analytical query workloads.
  • Authored modular Terraform infrastructure to provision multi-tenant AWS cloud environments, including containerized ECS Fargate clusters, RDS PostgreSQL instances, serverless ingestion pipelines (EventBridge, SQS, Lambda), and Cognito multi-tenant authentication.
  • Served as a Full-Stack Lead on the Rx Clinical Concierge platform, building features across an Angular SPA and .NET / Azure Function microservices, while establishing front-end standards and transitioning a siloed team of 5 developers into cross-functional full-stack contributors.
  • Authored enterprise standards for trunk-based development and feature management, designing a centralized feature flag architecture (Azure App Config + custom .NET/Angular libraries) adopted across mobile, customer-facing digital, and divisional teams.

Software Engineer

Benchmark Media Systems | Syracuse, NY
August 2020 – December 2020
  • Consolidated disparate embedded display codebases for microprocessor touchscreen hardware into a single modular codebase with target-specific build flags, simplifying maintenance across product lines.
  • Automated the firmware compilation and flashing workflow into a one-step build script, replacing manual IDE compilation and reducing setup time on the production floor.

Software Engineer

Luminous Residential | Remote
March 2020 – August 2020
  • Built automated customer onboarding pipelines and integration workflows using JavaScript/TypeScript scripts and Zapier, eliminating manual setup bottlenecks as the company rapidly rolled out "Amenity Boss" during a COVID-19 business pivot.

Senior Software Engineer

Excellus BCBS | Dewitt, NY
October 2018 – February 2020
  • Built a unified internal web application (NYPFL Maintenance) that replaced a fragmented manual process of spreadsheets and paper forms for paid family leave tracking, establishing the organization’s first direct programmatic API integrations with enterprise HR and ERP platforms.
  • Developed a Docker-based proof-of-concept to containerize local development environments, demonstrating a streamlined approach to simplify configuration and onboarding for digital web engineering teams.

Software Engineer

SRC, Inc. | North Syracuse, NY
January 2018 – October 2018
  • Engineered a standalone JavaFX desktop application for a proprietary chemical hazard prediction model (DREAM), providing research scientists and external stakeholders with an intuitive interface for parameter simulation.
  • Developed an automated batch testing suite to validate parameter variations against baseline datasets, significantly accelerating model verification cycles.

Early Experience

  • Software Engineer Intern — Benchmark Media Systems (Embedded UI & SPI, May 2017 – Sept 2017)
  • Contract Software Engineer — Apsis Labs (Xamarin Forms & Ruby on Rails, Jan 2017 – Apr 2017)

Education

B.S. in Computer Science
Oregon State University, 2016 – 2017
B.A. in Philosophy & Religious Studies
Roberts Wesleyan College, 2013 – 2015 (Summa Cum Laude)
